Minimum Qualifications to Apply: (selections made on a competitive basis)
Lifeguards will be scheduled according to their availability, but are expected to work full-time, especially weekends and holidays, throughout the summer. Beach lifeguarding is very physically demanding and guards are expected to maintain adequate levels of fitness at all times. Current starting salary is $9.75 per hour and lifeguards work approximately 40hrs a week. Completed applications and a copy of a current (less than 1 yr. old) physical; or note stating you are fit to work in a physically demanding position; signed by a licensed physician or physicians assistant should be mailed to: Lifeguard tryouts will begin at 8:00am, at the UTMB Field House Swimming Pool, on April 12th and May 3rd 2008. You must have a current (less than 1 yr old) copy of a physical; or a physician or physician's assistant note stating you are fit to work in a physically demanding position on file with an application to tryout. Tryout and interview participants are generally finished by 1:00pm. Tryouts consist of three parts: a 500m swim in nine minutes or less in the pool, a urine drug screen, and an interview. A fourth component, a Run-Swim-Run will be held at 8:00am on May 10th. The Galveston Island Beach Patrol 2006 Training Academy will begin Saturday, May 12 at 9:00am. Class will meet from 9:00am-6:00 on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13. The academy will be held May 14-18 from 4:00pm-10:00pm, May 19-20 from 9:00am-6:00pm, and May 21-25 from 4:00-10:00pm. All above dates are mandatory. The course consists of 120 hours of training including 1st Aid, CPR, Beach Guarding, and Physical Training. Lifeguard candidates will be paid a training wage for the time they spend in the training course. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy, candidates will be promoted to Lifeguard 1 status and will be eligible to work for The Galveston Island Beach Patrol. |
